Nutrition Tips

Feb 2016

  • ·         Unsaturated fats are better to decrease inflammation than saturated fats.  Examples of unsaturated fats include olive oil, avocado, nuts, salmon.  Saturated fats include animal fats (butter, fatty meats) and tropical oils (coconut, palm, palm kernel).  Trans fats (partially hydrogenated oil) are the worst of all fats.
  • ·         Fats and oils (good or bad) have significant calories.  If you are trying to lose weight, don’t go overboard on them.
  • ·         You can find research on the benefits of almost all diets, but calories do count and the longest lasting results come from making changes that you can continue permanently.
  • ·         Naturally occurring Omega-3 fats are highest in seafood, but there are also omega-3s in walnuts and flaxseed if you are looking for plant-based sources.
  • ·         Many people are low or deficient in Vitamin D even in people who live in Woodland, CA.
